It is estimated that approximately 785,000 gang members and 26,500
gangs were active in the United States in 2006.
High school dropouts are 3.5
times more likely than high school graduates to be arrested, and more than 8
times as likely to be incarcerated.
Across the USA, 68% of state
prison inmates do not receive a high school diploma.
At more than 100 of
California’s 1,000 high schools, the majority of these students are not
expected to gradate.
Nationally, nearly 50% of
African-American and nearly 40% of Latino youth attend high schools in which
graduation is not the norm.
